UNIDO ITPO Tokyo, JICA and the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania organized the “Tanzania Investment Webinar -Zanzibar-” on Wednesday 3 July 2024. The webinar was attended by 127 participants interested in business and investment opportunities in Zanzibar.

The webinar was opened by Mr. Hitoshi Ara, Chief Representative of JICA Tanzania Office, followed by remarks from H.E. Mr. Baraka Luvanda, Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania and H.E. Mr. Yasushi Misawa, Ambassador of Japan to Tanzania respectively.  While introducing geographical and cultural aspects of Zanzibar, high expectations for the seminar were expressed with Zanzibar presenting a multitude of opportunities for Japanese companies.

In his keynote speech “Zanzibar’s Blue Economy”, Captain Hamad Bakar Hamad, Principal Secretary of Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries highlighted the fact that the tourism and fisheries sectors support the livelihood of about two-thirds of the population, accounting for nearly 40% of the GDP, as well as business opportunities in fisheries, ports, tourism, oil, and gas sectors.

From Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA), the first point of call for all potential investors, Mr. Khamis Dunia spoke about the investment climate and opportunities in Zanzibar.  The presentation introduced free economic zones (FEZ) such as FUMBA and MICHEWENI as well as various incentives for investment.

Finally, Mr. Carlos Santos, General Manager of RIU HOTELS & RESORTS (HOTEL RIU JAMBO) currently investing in Zanzibar’s tourism sector, accounting for nearly 30% of Zanzibar’s GDP, spoke about the attractiveness of doing business in Zanzibar.

During the Q&A session, questions were asked about the current status of seafood exports, plans to further promote tourism development, and oil and gas development.

The webinar was concluded with closing remarks by Ms. Fumio Adachi, Head of UNIDO ITPO Tokyo.
