UNIDO ITPO Tokyo jointly with the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Japan organized an online seminar titled “Investment Attractiveness of Pharmaceutical industry of Uzbekistan and Opportunities for Japanese Companies” on 17 June 2020.
Mr. Temirov Alisher, Deputy Director of the Agency on Development of the Pharmaceutical Industry introduced the rapid growth of its industry in recent years, referring to 1) the market size amounting to US$ 1.3 billion annually, 2) implementation of 50 projects of investment costs equivalent to US$150 million during 2018-2019, 3) 30% growth on the number of companies with the domestic production at triple rate in 2019 compared to 2014.
Mr. Temirov also emphasized that the projects located in the 6 pharmaceutical free economic zones in the country will benefit from various incentives such as exemption of land tax, property tax, import duty on raw materials and equipment/machinery for 3-10 years, depending on the investment costs. He also added that the export volume is expected to grow from the current US$35 million to US$85 million in 2024, and the ratio of companies with GMP certification will reach 100% in 2022.
The presentation was followed by such questions from the webinar participants as the future potential of pharmaceutical industry, challenges for Japanese companies in doing business in Uzbekistan, as well as questions related to medicinal herb cultivation and availability of raw materials.
