UNIDO ITPO Tokyo supported an online seminar, “Partnering with Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) for Africa’s Development – with a focus on the Southern African Development Community – Development Finance Resources Center (SADC-DFRC)” on July 28, 2020, organized by the Association of African Economy and Development Japan (AFRECO). The first session focused on partnerships with DFIs in Africa.
This summer, AFRECO has signed an MOU with SADC-DFRC to promote collaboration and share information, knowledge and experience with DFIs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In response, AFRECO has created a platform for Japanese companies and Africa by taking advantage of director Mr. Tetsuya Fukunaga’s network with DFIs. AFRECO will be hosting a series of online seminars every month, with speakers from various DFIs.
In the first session, Mr. Fukunaga focused on the role of DFIs in African countries and how they can work with Japanese companies. He worked for five years at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) as a Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) advisor and four years at the SADC-DFRC as a JICA expert in development finance.
Mr. Fukunaga also stressed the importance of the role of the DFIs in the SDGs, noting that the impact of COVID-19 has made them more important in terms of mobilizing domestic resources for health and economic policies. He also explained that for Japanese companies, partnerships with DFIs would foster confidence, ensure bankability and absorb foreign exchange risk.
