Event Report: Nigeria Business Seminar

UNIDO ITPO Tokyo organized an online seminar, “Nigeria Business Seminar” on 16 September 2020, jointly with the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC).

Followed by the Opening Remarks by Mr. Yasunaga, Head, UNIDO ITPO Tokyo, the Executive Secretary of NIPC, Ms. Sadiku explained in her keynote presentation recent business environments and investment potentials in Nigeria. She concluded with an invitation to the Japanese companies to establish their presence in Nigeria in order to take advantages of its largest market in Africa.

In the First Panel Session, Mr. Lanlehin from Yokogawa Nigeria Limited and Mr. Inoue from STANDAGE Inc., mentioned quality human resources as well as the strategic geographical location of Nigeria, from the viewpoint of Japanese companies operating in the country. Mr. Adefeko from Olam Nigeria Limited and Mr. Ezenwere from Arone expressed their expectation to the Japanese investors.

In the Second Panel Session, Mr. Elias-Fatile from the Embassy of Nigeria in Japan and Mr. Oyekunle from the Nigeria Export Processing Zones (NEPZA) first explained how they can support Japanese companies’ business in Nigeria, including incentives applied in the Processing Zones. Mr. Shigeyo Nishizawa from JETRO Lagos mentioned the recent rise of Nigerian startups in communication, agriculture, logistics and fintech sectors. Finally, Mr. Bamidele from UNIDO Nigeria stated that COVID-19 had negative impact on the country’s macro and micro economy but at the same time it strengthened the free trading in the continent including AfCFTA and new business opportunities in the IT/Digital sector.

Mr. Baba and Mr. Salami from NIPC, supporting Japanese companies’ business in Nigeria with UNIDO ITPO Tokyo, also participated in the both panel sessions and responded to questions from the audience.
