UNIDO ITPO Tokyo jointly with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Board of Investment of Pakistan (BOI) organized “Pakistan Investment Seminar” online on 29 September 2020.
Followed by the Opening Remarks by HE Mr. Imtiaz Ahmad, Ambassador of Pakistan, HE Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment mentioned that Japan’s investments in various sectors of Pakistan has amounted to US$538 since 2012, and invited Japanese companies to explore and benefit from the opportunities being offered in Special Economic Zones in Pakistan. Mr. Dawood also introduced that Pakistan ranked 108th in the Ease of Doing Business Raking 2020 from 136th in the previous year, reflecting Pakistan government’s commitment and efforts to further improve the investor friendly business climate.
Mr. Atif R. Bokhari, Chairman of BOI mentioned that Pakistan’s economy remains resilient despite the impact of COVID-19 and emphasized that Pakistan is an ideal destination for investment from the viewpoint of its geopolitical importance, abundant natural and human resources, as well as strong policy and structural reforms. He also introduced that an attractive incentive package is being offered for construction industry with an increasing demand of housing, which is estimated to be around 700,000 annually. Mr. Dawood listed the major sectors available for Japanese investors including power, infrastructure, telecom, textile, agro-based industry, food processing, pharmaceuticals, construction, tourism and auto sector.
The representative from the investment and trade offices in Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab introduced the specific features of each province, business climate and potential sectors for investment, as well as Special Economic Zones (SEZs) available for investors. Q&A focused on the COVID-19 situation and its impact on Pakistan economy, the progress of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and business opportunities in such sectors as logistics and waste management.
