Event Report: Transforming the World with Digital Tech and Innovation

UNIDO ITPO Tokyo organized “Transforming the World with Digital Tech and Innovation[別窓] ” webinar on 26 March 2021, jointly with the UNDP Japan. (#TurnItAround)

This session will examine how digital technologies and innovation can bring opportunities and values to those “furthest behind” and contribute to the SDGs, while addressing poverty and inequality.

Mr. Ryan Takeshita, Editor-in-chief, The Huffington Post Japan moderated this session and three panelists were invited from CEO, SUCRECUBE JAPON INC., Mr. Koichi Sato who has brought transformation to the people’s lives through the provision of internet access in Senegal, Ms. Ada Osakwe, Founder, NULI & AGROLAY (Nigeria), and Ms. Gifty Mintaa Quarshie, Co-founder/Head of Administration & HR, Techshelta Company Limited (Ghana).

Mr. Takeshita stated the importance of that people, NGOs, private sectors, entrepreneurs, and governments co-work together with technology to solve global issues. He also called for harmonizing together to take an action and promote use of technology.

Mr. Sato introduced his experience of introducing internet access in Senegal with UNIDO ITPO Tokyo and Ms. Aïssatou NDIAYE who is an Africa advisor for UNIDO ITPO Tokyo. He also strengthen that digital infrastructure contribute to tackle with inequality and that no one should be left behind when installing digital technology.

Ms. Ada highlighted that co-creating the solution using technology is a key. She also mentioned that this is the best way to proceed in balancing between the traditional knowledge of the local communities and the application of technologies which are sometimes coming from other parts of the world.

Ms. Gifty featured importance of digital technology on business field under COVID-19. She explained that the challenge has taught us that we need to launch some form of digital technology in our business. If you fail to do that, you will be out of business and out of relevance.

As remarks, Mr. Takeshita concluded that technology itself will not solve everything, however, harmonizing with a variety of sectors and working together with technology will solve the problems.
