Event Report: Partnering with DFIs for Africa's Development 5: Special Edition- Export Credit Insurance Corporation in South Africa

UNIDO ITPO Tokyo supported the online seminar “Partnering with DFIs for Africa’s Development – Session 5: Special Edition- Export Credit Insurance Corporation in South Africa” organized by the Association of African Economy and Development Japan (AFRECO) on 28 April 2021.

Export Credit Insurance Corporation (ECIC) was established in 2001 under the Export Credit and Foreign Investment Insurance Act in 1957. The mandate of the ECIC is to facilitate export trade and cross-border investments between South Africa and the rest of the world.

Mr. Mandisi Nkuhlu, Chief Operating Officer of ECIC, introduced at the beginning of his presentation the overview of ECIC and its mandate. Following that, he briefly outlined the case of transaction, which the ECIC has worked on in the past in South Africa, such as IRAN, ZIMBABWE, ZAMBIA, MALAWI, MOZAMBIQUE, NIGERIA and DRC.

In his summary remarks, Mr. Mandisi Nkuhlu exlpained the potential of South Africa as emerging markets and need for the reinforcement through bilateral relations. He also highlighted the value and potential of ECIC, stating “The ECIC is an invaluable strategic partner for doing business in Africa as an African ECA.” and  “The ECIC has been instrumental in supporting a wide variety of transactions across many sectors of the economy with a successful track record spanning over a 20-year period.”

In Q & A session, Mr. Mandisi Nkuhlu gave further input based on the raised questions by participants, which related to the investment opportunities in South Africa and potential collaboration with Japanese companies.

The seminar was closed with gratitude by Mr. Tetsuya Fukunaga, Director of AFRECO, to all participants and he promised to continue holding the next series of Africa’s Development seminar.
