Plant Growth Biostimulant: High Concentrate Fulvic Acid Solution "Fujimin®"

Plant Growth Biostimulant: High Concentrate Fulvic Acid Solution "Fujimin®"

Japan Conservation Engineers & Co., Ltd.

Fujimin®: High Concentrate
Fulvic Acid Solution, Enhancing
Growth of Plants and Crops in Harmony with the Environment

Fujimin® is the high concentrate fulvic acid solution which can be obtained by only the mass production technology using timber from forest thinning. Fulvic acid is one of the components of humic substances generally obtained from humic soil in forest. While fulvic acid has the effect of facilitating the absorption of fertilizer by plants and improving the soil environment, it can normally be found only in trace amounts in the terrestrial soil and the bottom of water bodies.

As Fujimin® is produced with natural materials through non-microbial process, it has no environmental impact, even though fulvic acid concentration of Fujimin® has several hundred times as high as nature-derived.

Major Features and Advantages

Fujimin® has the following effects as general features of fulvic acid.

  1. Activation of photosynthesis
Fulvic acid does not have a uniform molecular structure and is a relatively large molecule with a certain range of molecular weight (500 to 2,000). As a characteristic of the molecule, fulvic acid has many carboxyl groups and phenolic alcohol groups in the molecule. These multiple groups (ligands in complex chemistry) stably wrap the mineral components in the soil and efficiently transport them into plant cells (chelating effect). Iron and magnesium ions are indispensable for photosynthesis, and fulvic acid promotes the function of transporting those ions in the soil into plant cells by a chelating effect, thereby leading to activation of photosynthesis.
Fig. 2 Scheme of chelating effect

  2.  Efficient absorption of fertilizer
In situations where the fertilizer component is not sufficiently dissolved in the soil, the addition of fulvic acid promotes
the elution of the fertilizer component into the soil.

  3. Buffering of soil pH (when using for basic soil, or for acidic soil with basic material)

Fulvic acid has the effect of buffering soil pH. Specifically, when used in an alkaline soil, the soil pH is shifted to neutral and stabilized. On the other hand, for acidic soils, by using together with alkaline materials, soil pH is shifted to neutral and the pH fluctuation is reduced

  4. Promotion of soil aggregation
Aggregation of soil plays an important role in plant growth. The soil aggregation is promoted by fulvic acid (humic substances) mediating iron and aluminum, one of the constituents of the soil particles, to bind the soil particles together.

  5. Control of damge from salinity
Crops do not grow in a salty soil environment. In many soils with a high salinity, salts (such as NaCl) are strongly sandwiched in the crystal structure of the soil, and are not carried out of the crystal lattice in rain or the like. When fulvic acid is used, the salt trapped in the soil crystals is carried out of the crystals and flows out due to rain or the like. Utilizing this principle, a ridge having a soil environment with low salt content can be created by forming a ridge and providing a step.

  6. Improvement of plant robustness
The effect of facilitating the intake of nutrients and promoting the absorption of iron and magnesium ions required for photosynthesis improves the plant's overall robustness against pests and adverse natural environments.

Fig. 3 Illustration of Fujimin®’s effect

  • Since Fujimin® is a concentrated solution of fulvic acid, it is needs 500 times dilution with water for use when using. Therefore, Fujimin® is economical and can be transportable more easily.
  • Fujimin® contributes to resource recycling because it is made from domestic thinned wood, while most fulvic acid products are extracted from overseas mining resources, that causes environmental destruction issues.
  • Fujimin® contains more than 4,000mg/liter of fulvic acid solution and is not a mixture with liquid fertilizers. Therefore, it can be easily adapted to any soil condition, and is particularly effective for smart agriculture.

Technology Data

Possible applications

Since agriculture is a key industry in many developing countries, improving the efficiency and the quantity of harvest is an important national priority in those countries.
Fujimin® not only has the effect of improving the yield of crops efficiently, but also expands the applicability of crops to acidic and alkaline soils. That is why Fujimin® can contribute to the expansion of the farmland.

Competitive advantage

Since many fulvic acid products of competing companies are manufactured through a complex process from sediments, they are more expensive and older than Fujimin®. Old fulvic acids tend to have lower activity compared with fresh fulvic acids because the activity of the fulvic acids has deterioration over time.

On the other hand, Fujimin® made from wood fibers and organic acids derived from organic substances of natural origin, which is more inexpensive and has higher effectiveness of fulvic acid, because it is freshly and industrially mass-produced by the organic acid fermentation process of wood chips without microorganisms and condensation, and polymerization process of wood fiber lignin with organic acids. It is expected that Fujimin® has functions of promoting photosynthesis in plants, discharging excess salts and promoting the effective utilization of unused fertilizers in the soil. The reason specifically why the product is expected to have an effect of activating photosynthesis indispensable for plant growth is that it has a strong function of taking iron ions by the chelating effect, and has higher amount of ferrous ion than products of other companies.

Demonstration of Fujimin®
Location: soybean farm in Pirapo, Paraguay
Period: from September 2018 to February 2019
Scale of demonstration experiment: 30ha
Target crop: soybean

[Experiment]
Soybean was planted on 32ha of the field in Sep.2018. 20days later, Fujimin® diluted 500times was sprayed to 30ha out of 32ha of the planted field. Fujimin® was not sprayed for the 2ha of the field for the comparison.
In total 8liters of Fujimin® were diluted 500 times with water and then spayed for 30ha of the field. Spraying by a gigantic sprayer was divided twice, i.e.; 2,000 liters of diluted Fujimin® containing 4liters of Fujimin® for each.
Fig. 4 Test filed in Paraguay

[Result]
4.3tons/ha of the average yield of soybean was resulted by the application of Fujimin® (in2019), while the previous year’s average soybean yield was 2.9tons/ha (in2018).
The yield has improved by 1.48 times.

Technical maturity / Past record of introduction

1) Domestic sales records
Fujimin® has been sold in Japan since 2015, and has shipped over 60,000 liters so far. Major shipping destinations are large-scale public works. For example, the vegetation base embankment of the coastal disaster prevention forest in the Minamisoma area of Fukushima Prefecture is used. There is salt removal, etc., and it is used in tens of hectares. In recent years, the use of vegetables and orchard farmers in Japan whose soil has deteriorated due to continuous cropping has been promoted.

2) Overseas shipping records
・ People’s Republic of China 2,000 liters for farmland
・ Taiwan 100 liters for greening
・ Bhutan 100 liters for greening
・ Paraguay 2,300 liters for farmland
Japan Conservation Engineers has been participating in JICA’s disseminating survey from 2019.
・ Indonesia 2,000-liters for shrimp farm; used for agglomeration of remaining feed
