UNIDO ITPO Tokyo, Embassy of Japan in Zambia, and Embassy of Zambia in Japan will organize the “Zambia Investment Webinar” on Thursday 25 July 2024. This webinar is an event to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Zambia, and has applied as a TICAD 9 partner project.
The Republic of Zambia is a landlocked country in the southern region of Africa, surrounded by eight countries: Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The country is about twice the size of Japan, but has a population of about 25.7 million (World Bank, 2023), with about 10% of the population living in the capital city of Lusaka. Zambia’s capital, Lusaka (lies at an altitude of 1,200 meters) has a pleasant year-round climate, and in terms of security is considered to be relatively safe compared to other African countries.
Although Zambia is rich in mineral resources such as copper and cobalt, the country has long adopted a development policy of economic diversification, striving to move away from an economy dependent on mining. In recent years, the country has begun to show signs of economic diversification, as demand for non-mineral products both domestically and internationally has increased due to the economic growth of neighboring countries as well as its own economy, and the volume of trade in these products has grown.
At the seminar, Mr. Mulenga, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, will discuss the latest industrial policies and strategies, and the Director General of the Zambia Development Agency will introduce the latest investment outlook and opportunities.
As an example of investment by a Japanese company, we will also hear from Hitachi Construction Machinery Zambia, engaged in sales and service of mining and construction equipment as well as remanufactured parts business in Zambia. UNIDO’s project in partnership with Hitachi Construction Machinery Zambia will also be introduced, in which an educational curriculum for operators of mining and construction equipment is being implemented through technical assistance in the creation of educational materials, educational equipment, and instructor training.
In addition, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. will talk about the advantages of doing business Zambia, including their new business that crosses small and micro farmers with digital technology, which they are collaborating with an African agricultural company, ETG Group (Mitsui acquired a partial stake in 2018).
We look forward to your participation.
