The initiative is part of UNIDO’s project on “Integrated stabilization, economic recovery and reconstruction support for displaced persons and returnees in Iraq” that the Organization has implemented since April 2016.

The three-day practical course focused on two models of Tohatsu portable fire pumps. The participants – two mechanic instructors and a technical adviser from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Kurdistan Region – gained knowledge of sub-level components and were instructed about finding faults for the pumps.

They will develop a teaching curriculum for local students who will learn how to repair and service pumps and their engines to earn income and support their families.

Small motor engines are commonly used in households and commercial facilities in Iraq. These engines help people to pump water and generate electricity. Knowledge about the use of fire water pumps is also essential for responding to emergency situations.  

Director General of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Kurdhistan Region of Iraq, Arif Hito, in his statement commended the partnership between UNIDO and his ministry, saying that “many qualification courses have been offered”.

“In the project, funded by the Government of Japan, several new workshops were added. The training with Tohatsu in Japan was good for the development of our trainers,” said Hito.

In his comments about the outcome of the course, Japan’s ambassador to Iraq, Fumio Iwai, noted: “We strongly hope that the three trainees will contribute further to employment promotion for internally displaced people, returnees and host communities in the Kurdistan region with knowledge and skills learned through the course. Japan continues to stand by Iraq as a partner assisting it in overcoming the crisis and achieving peace and stability”.

Tohatsu provided the trainees with digital materials for curriculum development and hard copies of owner’s manuals, parts manuals and service manuals for both units used in the practical sessions.

As certified instructors, the trained specialists will deliver on-site training to displaced persons and returnees in Kurdistan to promote local employment and development.
