UNIDO ITPO Tokyo organized a webinar “Opportunities in Senegal: Energy and Related Sectors” on 21 September 2023. It was moderated by Ms. Aissatou Ndiaye, UNIDO ITPO Tokyo’s Advisor in Senegal, and attended by 95 participants mainly from the Japanese private sector.
H.E. Mr. Osamu Izawa, Ambassador of Japan to Senegal, in his opening remarks, mentioned Senegal’s stable politics and accelerating economic growth and introduced the country’s potential in the energy sector. H.E. Mr. Jean Antoine Diouf, Ambassador of Senegal, stated that the energy sector is a priority in Senegal’s development plan and that a partnership with Japan would enable the country to achieve universal access to electricity and industrialization.
Ms. Adama Ndiaye Gueye, Head of Marketing Department of the APIX explained the recent improvements in the business environment and opportunities in the SEZs, before reporting on the results of the first ‘Invest in Senegal’ Forum, which was held in Senegal in July 2023.
Ms. Oumy Khairy Diop, Director of Strategy and Regulation of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energies, illustrated the legal system of the energy sector. Mr. Papa Samba Ba, Director of Hydrocarbons, reported the current situation and plans for oil and natural gas development and projects in collaboration with Japan, emphasizing that there are still various projects in which Japanese companies can participate.
Mr. Fadel Fall of the National Company for Integrated Waste Management (SONAGED) introduced waste data in Senegal and the waste-to-energy project and strategy and mentioned that he would like to work in a public-private partnership. Mr. Abdoulaye Ba of the Business Council for the Promotion of Renewable Energies (COPERES) also explained activities aimed at the development of renewable energies and stated that he would “definitely like to work with Japanese companies”.
Mr. Kazumasa Nagamori, UNIDO Project Manager, also introduced UNIDO’s support for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in Africa and encouraged the audience to “make use of it when setting up energy businesses in Senegal”.
Questions on solar projects were raised from the audience and the seminar was concluded with closing remarks by Ms. Fumio Adachi, Head of UNIDO ITPO Tokyo.
