The 60 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Republic of Senegal was celebrated at JICA Global Plaza in Tokyo on 18 November 2020, followed by a seminar with two main focuses – the JICA’s 40 years of presence and attractiveness of the business climate in Senegal. The events were also broadcasted online.
At the ceremony opened by H.E. Mr Gorgui Ciss, Ambassador of the Republic of Senegal to Japan, guests from the Japan-Senegal Parliamentary Friendship Association, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the African Diplomatic Corps (ADC) in Tokyo, and ECOWAS Diplomatic Group in Tokyo congratulated the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Senegal and Japan. All guests joined the toast by Honorary Consul of Senegal in Kita-kyushu at their seats which were kept distance with each other.
In the second session, JICA’s overseas cooperation volunteers over the past 40 years since 1980 was featured and H.E. Mr. Mikio Mori, Director-General/Assistant Minister (Ambassador), African Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan mentioned that Japan contributes especially in human capacity building and technology transfer. Then Mr. Ryuichi Kato, Vice President of JICA followed and presented JICA’s activities in fishery, irrigation system, healthcare, and education. The number of JICA’s overseas cooperation volunteers dispatched to Senegal has reached over 1,100 until today, and Mr. Kotaro Yamamoto, Former JICA Volunteer who worked in a school for primary education teachers in Senegal from 2016 to 2018 shared his experience. Mr. Fumikazu Goto from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan introduced the project for rehabilitation of the third wharf in Dakar port and other infrastructure projects where Japan-Africa Infrastructure Development Association (JAIDA) played important roles. He added that JAIDA consists of around 180 Japanese companies, mainly from construction and manufacturing sectors. At last, Mr. Yuko Yasunaga, Head of UNIDO ITPO Tokyo and Ms. Aïssatou Ndiaye, Advisor in Senegal explained about two technology transfer and demonstration projects to mitigate impact of COVID-19 in Senegal and an upcoming online business matching event with 20 Senegalese companies (20 November – 4 December) as well as business climate in Senegal.
